VIDEO: Armed police swoop after reports of man with a firearm in Wigan

Armed police swooped on an area of Wigan following reports that a man was in possession of a firearm.

Police responded to the incident on Severn Drive, Wigan shortly after 11.20am today.

Officers attended and arrested two men aged 18 and 40 on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said enquiries are ongoing.

The incident led to a major police presence around Norley Hall Avenue in front of the shops.

Video posted on social media shows armed police and dogs at the scene.

The footage shows officers hold a man to the ground and then get him up while onlookers shout abuse.

A picture shows six police cars and residents gathering to see what had happened.

A GMP spokesman said: "Police were called to Severn Drive, Wigan shortly after 11.20am today following a report that a man was in possession of a firearm.

"Officers attended and arrested two men aged 18 and 40 on suspicion of possession of a firearm.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
