Contractors who are aiding the NHS in the development of such facilities across the UK face logistical challenges with the transport and development of the modular buildings.

The DW Stadium proved an ideal location for the contractors providing the buildings as it was capable of hosting up to 19 drivers and trucks for the 38 modular buildings and within three miles of Wigan Infirmary.

The stadium doors were opened to the drivers, providing 24-hour toilet facilities and showers.

Staff from the DW Stadium are in constant communication with local authorities, including Wigan Council and Health & Social Care teams, with a view to using the DW Stadium to provide further support to our community at this time.

DW Stadium staff have also been in communication with customers who use the stadium throughout the year who may be vulnerable during this time to offer support.

Surplus confectionery stock from the concourses has been donated to local charity Fur Clemt, while local hotels supporting NHS staff have also been donated with equipment from the DW Stadium and food from the concourses.

Staff from Wigan Athletic Community Trust have taken part in food delivery drops to vulnerable people, while they have also phoned hundreds of Latics season ticket holders, aged over 65, who may need support during this difficult time.

Andy Birch, Wigan Athletic and DW Stadium Facilities Manager, said: “We are in daily contact with the local authorities to offer our support in any way we can, whether that be through our facilities, resources or personnel.

“Our NHS are under immense pressure and we want to provide our support.

"Everyone should remember they can make a difference by staying at home and following the guidance of the government and health authorities.”
