Wigan crook hid drugs in a Kinder egg

A Wigan man caught with drugs tried to dupe police by hiding them in a Kinder Surprise egg.

Normally containing a small toy for children, Keith Rodgers used the plastic shell to stash a quantity of amphetamine when stopped by police.

Appearing at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court, the 31-year-old of Blenheim Road, Marsh Green, pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug.

The incident occurred on June 18 at around 2.20am. A police officer had stopped Rodgers for a search after responding to reports that offences were occurring in the area.

On stopping Rodgers, the bobby noticed him trying to conceal something. A body search discovered around £10 worth of amphetamines - stuffed inside a Kinder Surprise egg.

Defending, solicitor Bob Toppin told justices: “I didn’t think you could get amphetamine in a Kinder egg!”

Mr Toppin added that the amount of amphetamine was small, and in line with an amount suggestive of personal use.

There was no suggestion of drug dealing or trafficking, and Rodgers was fully cooperative with police inquiries.

Mr Toppin also reported that unpaid work would be a suitable punishment for the unemployed Rodgers, as it might help him in his desire to get back into work.

“I hope he has learned his lesson from this,” he said.

Justices ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.

Rodgers was given 80 hours of unpaid work and eight days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. He must also pay costs of £170.
