Wigan referee earns promotion to Premier League

A referee from Wigan will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas next season in the Barclay's Premier League.

Paul Tierney, 35, has been promoted to the Select Group of referees in the country and will predominantly officiate in the BPL in 2017.

The stepdad of Wigan Warriors star Lewis Tierney, who once upon-a-time refereed in the SoccerDome, was promoted to the National List of Referees in 2009 and has been at that level since, refereeing more than 230 matches.

He was in the middle for five Barclays Premier League matches in the last two seasons and six other fixtures involving Premier League teams.

He also has made two Wembley appearances, including as the assistant referee in Chelsea’s 2009 FA Cup semi-final victory over Arsenal.
