Today sees the launch of St John Ambulance’s Safe Haven scheme after a “hugely successful” trial period in the run-up to Christmas last year.

It is the latest in a number of similar schemes in place across the country as part of the St John Ambulance Winter Pressures Project in partnership with NHS England.

London, Birmingham and Newcastle all have similar mobile Alcohol Reception Centres run by the first aid charity.

Their purpose is to relieve pressure on the NHS by minimising ambulance call-outs and hospital visits as a result of weekend revelry although it also provides a facility for hospital transportation if required.

Manned by highly trained St John people and other medical professionals, the Safe Haven provides first response and primary care treatment to patients with minor illnesses and medical conditions.

Welfare, as well as clinical support is on hand for anyone who may need help to find their friends, call a taxi or simply have a cup of tea and re-group after an evening in the pubs and clubs.

Intoxicated or otherwise vulnerable people are given a place of safety on a night out and the centres provide a much-needed proactive presence in the community.

Local businesses have backed the scheme and support from the public has been overwhelmingly positive according to Wigan Council.

Coun Yvonne Klieve, lead member for night-time economy at Wigan Council said: “The Safe Haven pilot last year was received really positively by the general public and nearby businesses.

“We’re delighted to have secured short-term funding so we can deliver the scheme for another few weeks in partnership with St John Ambulance.

“The Safe Haven is a great way to ensure revellers and visitors remain safe while enjoying their time in Wigan and is in line with our vision for a prosperous town centre.”

Sacha Lord, Night-time Economy Advisor for Greater Manchester said: “For me, safety on a night out always has to be the number one priority.

“Key stakeholders in Wigan also share my view and trialled a pilot of a Safe Haven throughout December, even covering Wigan’s famous Boxing

Day.

“From the results and stats collated during December, I am delighted that Wigan have agreed to continue the good work with St John Ambulance and make it a permanent fixture now, every Saturday on King

Street.

“Being the first Safe Haven across Greater Manchester, outside of the city centre, this sends a strong signal that Wigan has safety at the forefront for a night out.”
