Emergency services were called to the incident in Skelmersdale involving a Peugeot 107 and a Vauxhall Insignia at around midday on Sunday.

Both cars suffered front end damage in the collision at the junction of White Ledge Road and Grimshaw Road, although it was not a head-on smash.

Firefighters had to remove a door from the Peugeot to get the female driver, who had several injuries, out safely. She was put on a stretcher before being immobilised on a trolley by the ambulance crew and taken to Fazakerley Hospital in Liverpool.

The passenger in the Peugeot and the driver of the Vauxhall were both given precautionary check-ups at the scene.

Traffic-calming measures were used while the emergency services dealt with the incident which avoided the busy route having to be shut.

The ambulance crews were already in attendance when the fire service arrived and the entire operation lasted around an hour.
