Woman in her 50s taken to hospital after being rescued from Wigan flat fire

A woman has been taken to hospital after being rescued by firefighters from a ground floor flat.

Fire crews along with police and paramedics, including an air ambulance, attended the home on Sefton Road in Ashton around noon on Friday (June 12).

The woman inside, who is believed to be in her 50s, was taken to hospital.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue confirmed that a firefighter had rescued the woman from the flat after the blaze broke out.

A cordon was set up in the streets surrounding the property following the incident.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

Police said they had been called to a fire and that a woman was treated for smoke inhalation.

A GMP spokesman said: "At around 12pm today (Friday, June 12), police were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a woman on Sefton Road in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan.

"Emergency services attended and a woman – aged in her 50’s - has been taken to hospital where she has received medical treatment.

"A scene is in place and enquiries are ongoing."

An ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called to a private address in Sefton Road just before midday.

"An air ambulance, rapid response vehicle and ambulance were called to the scene.

"This a police incident."
