A mother, who was travelling with her teenaged son in a Renault Kuga, was taken to hospital with chest pains following the crash at the junction of Pottery Road and Swan Meadow Road which also involved a Volkswagen Polo.

It was the Renault which ended up on its roof but both occupants – and the male driver and passenger of the VW who were in their 20s – were all able to scramble free of the wrecked vehicles unaided.

Paramedics treated all four casualties at the scene for "bumps and bruises” but only the woman – who was in her 30s – needed to be taken to hospital due to the chest and other pains she was suffering.

A crew from Wigan fire station was called to the scene following the crash at around 8pm on Wednesday October 5.

A fire service trauma technician treated the female casualty before the North West Ambulance Service took over.

Watch manager Nigel Shepherd said that his crew wasn’t required for any rescue work, but because there had been reports of a fuel leak.

Pottery Road was closed for two hours with traffic diverted down Swan Meadow Road while the scene was made safe and cleared.

The collision took place in an almost identical spot to one in June 2019 in which a man was seriously injured.
