Blundell’s Boxing Gym, which is based on Stephens Way in Poolstock, has been closed since March due to restrictions imposed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

And former IBF Intercontinental champion Blundell, who set up the gym in 2015, outlined the strict social distancing measures he has placed for when he is given the green light to reopen.

“We are hoping to reopen as soon as we are allowed too, hopefully in June or July,” he said.

“We’ve already been preparing for when we can reopen by filling new bags and putting them all two metres apart. We have a 3,500 square feet gym, so we’re very lucky we would still be able to cope with the changes and accommodate a good number of people in each class safely.

“When we re-open, we’re going to have limited numbers per class, to make sure everyone can be safe from contracting this terrible illness. And we’ll be running more classes so nobody misses out.

“After sessions, we will have a cleansing station, with whatever equipment is needed to ensure our gym is safe and clean for all of our boxers and coaches.

“We honestly cannot wait to be back open. We’ve missed all of our boxers, and are so excited to reunite with our boxing family.

“For the time being, we just need to stay positive, stay at home when you can, and stay alert because the quicker we do these things, the quicker we are back to normality.”
