The 44-year-old was only appointed in May this year, but tendered his resignation on Monday night – after a mere four matches in the hotseat.

That was accepted by club bosses, who have already begun the search for a replacement.

“I have to say 2020 doesn’t surprise me in the slightest,” said chairman Mark Hayes.

“After a surreal couple of weeks, we are looking for a new first-team manager.

“I remain 100% per cent confident in the squad that has been put together here, and am thoroughly looking forward to seeing what applications will come through for this exciting opportunity.

“We will not be rushed into making a hasty decision. The next appointment is key to our progression as a club. “

Applications are being invited via email to Hayes on [email protected] before the deadline of November 1.

Hurst left Town 14th in the North West Counties League Division One table, with three points on the board from their first four league games.

It was the ex-Barnsley, Chesterfield, Stockport, Notts County, Shrewsbury and Bury forward’s maiden senior management role in the game, having previously been reserve boss at Marine.

Meanwhile, Town overcame the upheaval to draw 2-2 at Cleator Moor Celtic on Tuesday night, Tyreek McCallum and Junior Dos Santos (pen) scoring the goals.
