Bournemouth 2 Wigan Athletic 2

A stoppage-time equaliser from Steve Cook robbed Wigan Athletic of what would have been a thoroughly-deserved FA Cup giant-killing at Premier League Bournemouth.

The visitors had led 2-0 after half an hour through Will Grigg and Nick Powell, an advantage they took into the interval.

Grigg reacted quickest to a loose ball in the Bournemouth box on four minutes after Gavin Massey had tried to get his head to Reece James’ cross.

Then, on 29 minutes, Powell struck a 25-yard free-kick beyond the clutches of Cherries goalkeeper Artur Boruc, via a kind deflection off the wall.

Bournemouth pulled one back 10 minutes after the restart through Lys Mousset, with a deflection off Dan Burn seeing the ball fly into the top corner.

That was the first goal Christian Walton had conceded in seven matches since returning from a broken leg - but it looked as though Latics would hold on for a famous win.

There was major drama just before the 90-minute mark, when substitute Ivan Toney raced clean through and, as he rounded Boruc and held off the last defender, tumbled to the ground.

With the 462 travelling fans baying for a penalty, referee Andy Madley waved play on - with Latics assistant boss Leam Richardson then sent to the stands for his protestations to the fourth official.

And salt was added to the Wigan wounds in the second of three added minutes, when Cook rose highest to nod home past Walton to set-up a replay at the DW Stadium later this month.

Incredibly, there was almost another sting in the tale as Ryan Fraser hit the outside of the post for the home team.

But that would have incredibly harsh on a Latics side who showed how seriously they were taking the competition by flying out of the traps.

Fielding their strongest available side, the visitors could not have got off to a better start.

Grigg got Jacobs in down the left-hand side, and the cross eventually came in from left-back James.

Massey competed for header at the far post, and the ball dropped to Grigg, who slammed home from close range.

It was almost 1-1 immediately, with Walton called upon to pull off a stunning save to keep out a free header from Mousset, who couldn’t move his feet quick enough to put away the rebound.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Boruc then made a mistake as he attempted to clear his lines, with the ball falling to Powell 35 yards out.

The ex-Manchester United man tried his luck with a first-time snap-shot, which sailed only just over the crossbar as Boruc raced back into his goal.

At the other end, it required some unbelievable series of defending from Latics to keep them in front, with a great save from Walton being followed by two fine blocks on the line by the covering Burn.

Not content to sit back and defend their lead, Latics almost doubled their advantage when, after being given time and space, Powell rifled agonisingly wide from the edge of the box.

But the home defence weren’t so lucky on the half-hour mark when Powell lined up a free-kick from similar distance, and saw it find the corner of the net via a fortuitous ricochet.

It was almost 3-0 before the break, with Grigg only failing to give Jacobs a tap-in because of some desperate last-ditch home defending.

Walton ensured Latics reached the interval with their two-goal lead when he got down smartly to keep out Connor Mahoney’s shot.

And the on-loan Brighton goalkeeper was at it again within seconds of the restart by denying Benik Afobe in acrobatic fashion.

Walton required a spot of fortunate moments later when he saw a Cook header loop on to the roof of the bar and over.

But the goal that had been coming arrived 10 minutes into the second period, with Mousset eventually breaking through.

That was the signal for Latics to make their first change, with Powell - who had been communicating with the bench for a few minutes - being replaced by David Perkins, and Toney taking over from Grigg shortly after.

Max Power - in for Lee Evans - wasted a couple of decent chances to reopen the two-goal Latics lead from the edge of the box, before Toney and Cook headed narrowly wide within seconds at either end.

Toney was putting himself about well and he almost created an opening for Massey, whose shot was blocked.

But the end-to-end-nature continued as Perkins literally threw himself into the path of a goalbound shot from Cherries substitute Callum Wilson.

Gary Roberts replaced Massey for the final eight minutes, as Bournemouth continued to push for a leveller and Latics tried desperately to land the knockout punch.

A Fraser free-kick, bound for the top corner, was flicked over by Walton, before the visitors were up in arms at being denied what they thought was a stonewall penalty.

Sam Morsy and Roberts combined to send Toney racing clean through on goal, with the last defender struggling to get back in time.

As the striker rounded Boruc, the last defender appeared to make contact with the Latics man, who was sent tumbling to the deck.

Referee Andy Madley waved play on, which infuriated most of the Latics side, the 462 travelling fans AND assistant boss Richardson, who was sent to the stands for voicing his protests.

And Wigan’s misery was complete when, deep into stoppage-time, Cook rose highest to nod home past an exposed Walton.

To be fair, it could have been even worse when, with the very last kick, Fraser hit the outside of the post with Latics desperately hanging on for a second bite at the Cherries.
