Burn’s first year at the DW Stadium following his move from Fulham was something of a bittersweet experience.

On one hand, after a shaky start he barely put a foot wrong on a personal level, with a series of highly-consistent displays that ensured he was the landslide winner of the Player of the Year award.

But on the flip side, his efforts were ultimately in vain, as Latics slipped back into the third tier at the first attempt.

“Obviously we’re all determined to bounce back straight away from the disappointment of relegation,” Burn told the Wigan Post.

“No-one wants to be playing in League One, and we don’t want to be there for longer than we have to.

“I’m sure whoever the new manager is, he’ll come in and assess the squad – who he wants to keep, who he wants to let go – and we’ll go again.

“Obviously there’s been a lot of change already this year with the squad compared to last year.

“Hopefully if we can keep hold of everyone, we’ll have a great squad to attack the league.

“Everyone will have had a year of playing with each other, and hopefully we’ll be able to kick on.”
