Gary Caldwell has spoken about his sacking for the first time

He was sacked by chairman David Sharpe on Tuesday after just two wins from their opening 14 Championship games.

The League One title-winning boss accepts results have not been good enough, but remained confident he was the right man to guide them away from the botttom-three.

“It is with great sadness I won’t be able to finish the job I started,” he told Sky Sports in a statement.

“I am fully aware results haven’t been good enough but having not lost by more than one goal all season, I truly believed we weren’t far from turning the corner.

“I’m sure this squad will continue to give everything they have.”

His departure ended a six-year link with Latics for the former captain.

He picked out his winning goal at Anfield as one of his highlights as a player, and described the FA Cup final win in 2013 as a “truly magical” moment.

Caldwell says he will forever hold Latics close to his heart, and said he had a “huge debt of gratitude” to Sharpe for giving him his chance.

He thanked fans for their support, and said he remains “hungry to succeed” in management.
