Caldwell: We're actively seeking targets

Gary Caldwell insists Wigan Athletic will have '˜a really competitive squad that can mount a challenge' by the end of this month.

Less than two weeks remain until the transfer window slams shut, with Caldwell still actively seeking reinforcements in defence and attack.

“I think we have got time,” the Latics chief revealed.

“How long is it to go, 10 or 11 days - that’s a long time in the transfer window.

“I think 10 or 11 hours is the time you start to panic, but we’re certainly not panicking yet.

“We know our targets, we’re actively trying to get them in.

“And I’m sure that, come September 1, we will have a really competitive squad that can mount a challenge.”

Latics are understood to have firm interest in Bolton utility man Josh Vela and Hearts defender Callum Paterson.

Caldwell, though, is playing his cards close to his chest.

“I’d prefer not to mention anyone until they are actually Wigan players,” he added.

“Certain things come out in the press, not from ourselves, which is a bit unfortunate. But we are going about our business to strengthen the squad before the deadline.”
