Captain Morgan eyeing Rovers return

The former Wales international centre-back has missed the last two matches after damaging a hamstring in training a fortnight ago.

But he is hoping to rejoin the rest of the group for full training today with a view to forcing his way back into the fold for the weekend.

“Craig’s back running, and doing stuff with the physios, and we’ll hopefully try to integrate him back into training on Thursday and Friday, and see how he is,” boss Gary Caldwell told the Evening Post.

“He’s coming along really well, and has made a quick recovery for the injury he had.”

Caldwell has also reported positive news concerning right-back Reece Wabara, who was able to play against Coventry last weekend after overcoming a hamstring problem of his own, and has reported no after-effects.

“Reece had trained last week and was fit to play on Saturday,” added Caldwell.

“It was touch and go whether he started, I just didn’t want to risk it. But you saw when he came on he was ready to contribute to the team and help us get the win.”

Latics head into the trip to the Keepmoat with a four-point lead over second-placed Burton, having seen the gap to third cut to nine points after Walsall – who have a game in hand – won at Gillingham in midweek.

Nevertheless, Latics can mathematically clinch promotion with a win at Burton next Tuesday, provided they pick up three points this weekend and the Brewers lose to play-off chasing Barnsley.

Caldwell, though, has refused to set any kind of points target to secure an immediate return to the Championship.

“Not at all,” he replied. “I want to progress the club and the team as much as I can, and make it as good as it can be.

“However many points that is, we’ll only know on May 8.

“In the meantime I’m only concerning myself with analysing Saturday’s game, trying to pick out where we can prove, as well as highlighting all the good things we’re doing.”

Meanwhile, Latics have requested more tickets for the trip to Blackpool on April 30, having sold out their initial 3,047 allocation in under three hours.
