Career switch for ex-Wigan Athletic man

Wigan Athletic old-boy Don Cowie has been tipped to become a top coach after hanging up his boots at the age of 37.

Cowie, who made 40 appearances for Latics between 2014-16, finished his career where it all started at the age of nine, with Ross County.

And after joining the club's coaching staff, County manager Stuart Kettlewell says Cowie - who also played for Watford, Cardiff and Inverness, as well as winning 10 caps for Scotland - has a key role to play.

“We had a conversation and it was important, especially in Don’s mind, he was committing 100 per cent to whatever he was doing – whether it was to be the playing side or coaching aspect," Kettlewell told the Press and Journal.

“He had a lot of thinking to do. He has had a terrific playing career.

“It was a tough decision for him to hang up the boots, especially when you think you can still play.

“Obviously this structure was starting to take shape, and it was important we felt we were getting the right people into the correct positions.

“We had several conversations, and Don looked into the future and felt this was the right option for him. We are delighted on that front."
