Donervon Daniels will this week take another huge step forward in his recovery from injury to give Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell a timely boost.

The 22-year-old underwent knee surgery in August after being plagued by the problem in pre-season.

His presence has certainly been missed this term, with the right-back berth being a real problem position.

Latics have been careful not to rush the big man back, but Caldwell says the end of the tunnel is in sight.

“Donervon will be back on the grass with the physios this week, joining in a little bit,” he said.

“He’s still a few weeks away, but it’s great news.”

There is also a promising update regarding left-back Reece James, who underwent further surgery on his ankle over the summer having suffered the initial problem in January.

“Reece will possibly be back on the grass next week, doing some of the lighter stuff, but again he’s a number of weeks away,” added Caldwell.

Far nearer to a comeback is utility man Andy Kellett, who has made phenomenal progress since suffering knee ligament damage during pre-season training.

“Andy’s been training with the first team, he’s ahead of the other two, but they’re all starting to make progress and integrate back into the squad,” reported Caldwell.

The Latics chief received a double injury boost over the weekend, with on-loan West Ham defender Reece Burke able to return to the side after a six-game absence following hernia surgery.

And Kyle Knoyle - another defender on loan from West Ham - was named on the bench having recovered from a dislocated elbow he suffered in his first training session with his new club back in July.
