The 29-year-old hasn't played a first-team game since March 2019 after sustaining a serious knee injury.

But having been the subject of interest from Latics on two previous occasions, his pedigree is not in doubt.

Darikwa featured twice for Zimbabwe in their African Cup of Nations qualification campaign in November and has maintained his match fitness with Forest’s Under-23 side.

He began his career at Chesterfield, working with Paul Cook and Leam Richardson and helping the Spireites to the League Two title in 2014 before joining Burnley.

Darikwa then helped the Clarets win the Championship title, and stayed with them for a further 12 months in the Premier League before moving to Forest.

Having played 63 times for the 'Tricky Trees', he now joins Latics looking to help Richardson and ex-Chesterfield teammate Dan Gardner secure League One status.

Darikwa will wear the No.2 shirt during his stay at the DW Stadium.
