Latics only required a point to finish top of the table regardless of what second-placed Blackburn did against Oxford at Ewood Park.

But they ensured they ended a golden campaign in style - and with a remarkable 98-point tally - by getting the win they thoroughly deserved.

Nick Powell it was who supplied the opening after being given too much time just inside his own half.

And Grigg raced clean through to slip the ball under the goalkeeper at the perfect moment.

The goalscorer then joined over 4,000 away fans behind the goal, to spark scenes of jubilation in the away end that lasted until well into the South Yorkshire night.

Powell had been restored to the starting line-up, one of two changes which also saw Gavin Massey recalled, with Gary Roberts and Ryan Colclough dropping to the bench.

But it was the home side who were first out of the blocks, and asking questions of the best defence in the division.

A clever ball inside Nathan Byrne found Rovers left-winger Danny Amos, who crossed into the middle towards John Marquis.

However, Doncaster’s leading scorer couldn’t make the most of the opportunity, and he stabbed the ball wide of the post.

Latics then gained a stranglehold on the game, with Gavin Massey trying his luck from the edge of the box, only to aim it straight at Marko Marosi - a former Latics junior goalkeeper.

Michael Jacobs then crossed from the left, agonisingly just too high at the far post for Powell, who gave his team-mate a thumbs-up for the idea.

Quick feet from Powell in the box saw him temporarily engineer an opportunity for himself, but he slipped as he was shooting and it didn’t trouble Marosi.

Great stuff from Sam Morsy saw the skipper control the ball beautifully on the edge of the box.

He fired in a low shot with his left foot, but Marosi was again well behind it.

As Latics pressed just before the half-time interval, Grigg somehow controlled a difficult cross from Byrne, with a touch that Lionel Messi would have been proud of.

Unfortunately he couldn’t get much power on the shot, and the chance had gone.

Latics picked up where they’d left off at the break, looking for the goal that would have settled any title nerves they had.

A Powell cross was flicked back by Massey to Grigg, who couldn’t get much power on the header.

But there was definitely a growing sense that a Latics goal was definitely coming.

And the moment over 4,000 travelling fans had been waiting for duly arrived with 15 minutes remaining – with a move of effortless simplicity.

Powell glided forward before sending a through ball for Grigg that dissected the home defence.

The Northern Ireland hitman made his way into the box, drew Marosi off line, and slid the ball under the goalkeeper at just the right moment to put Latics in front.

There followed some incredible scenes of celebration between players and supporters, with a real feeling that the title was now very much in the bag.

The remaining 15 minutes was played out with supreme professionalism, with Latics content to keep the ball and Doncaster not having the quality or the drive to get it back.

David Perkins, Gary Roberts and Devante Cole were sent on during the last 10 minutes - if anything to ensure a deserved round of applause for Massey, Powell and goalscorer Grigg.

By then the job had been done - and thoughts now switch to life back in the Championship!
