The diggers are in as the stadium undergoes its annual pitch renovations to be ready for the new season in August.

But a complete re-lay is once again necessary, to allow Latics to continue to play their attractive brand of football next term.

“I think one of the major influences in winning the league was relaying the pitch in February,” Caldwell told the Evening Post.

“If we hadn’t done that, it would have made it a lot more difficult.

“The club have again spent money on the pitch, and rightly so.

“We we need a good playing surface for us to be successful.”
