Former Wigan Athletic defender Jack Hendry has found himself on the receiving end of an extraordinary dig from a Dutch pundit.

Johan Boskamp, who played for Holland at the 1978 World Cup final, is equally well known in Belgium, where he played the majority of his club football.

He later went on to manage Anderlecht, Genk, Standard Liege and Stoke City before retiring to become a TV analyst in both Belgium and Holland.

And his impressions of Hendry - who now plays in Saudi Arabia, following spells in Belgium for Oostende and Brugge - were far from positive.

"With Jack Hendry in the team you are always going to have a hard time at this level," Boskamp - now 75 - told Voetbalkrant. "Even at my advanced age, I could still turn faster than that guy.

"Only one team has really been outplayed at the Euros... Scotland.

"The Netherlands also had a hard time with Poland, Albania also did more than decent against Italy. But how weak were Scotland in that opening match? It really wasn't normal.

"It seemed like they allowed Germany to safely win the game before half-time. Scotland are by far the weakest team I have seen at this European Championship."

Hendry spent two years with Latics between 2015-17 after joining from Partick Thistle, although his only three appearances came in the Football League Trophy.

After loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and MK Dons, he joined Dundee in 2017, which paved the way to a switch to Celtic the following summer.
