FA Cup round three

Monday, January 14, 1980

Wigan Athletic had only been granted entry into the Football League in 1978 after making 35 applications.

They were in the fourth division at the time. They travelled to Stamford Bridge for 
an FA-Cup third round tie against Chelsea, who were fighting for promotion to the First Division.

the overwhelming favourites.

Tommy Gore’s first-half goal sent Latics into the next-round as Wigan upset the hosts in-front of more than 23,000 fans. Wigan were rewarded with a trip to Goodison Park in the fourth-round, but their FA-Cup run ended with a 3-0 defeat to First-Division strugglers Everton.

FA Cup fourth round

Latics hosted First Division Norwich City in the fourth-round after beating Lincoln City 3-1, Darlington 5-0, 
and Gillingham 2-1 in the opening stages of the competition.

Latics legend Paul Jewell scored the only-goal and fired Wigan on their way to their best FA-Cup run in the 20th Century.

Wigan faced second-division Hull City in the fifth round and advanced to the last-eight after a 3-0 win against the Tigers at Springfield Park. They reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first-time and were defeated 2-0 at Springfield Park by Leeds United to end their historic cup run.

FA Cup Final

Wigan beat AFC Bournemouth, Macclesfield Town, Huddersfield Town, Everton and Millwall on their road to the Final.

Accompanied onto the Wembley pitch by mascot Joseph Kendrick, who was carried out by Emmerson Boyce, Latics were to write history. Ben Watson, who was returning after a leg-break suffered earlier in the season, headed home in the 91st minute from Shaun Maloney’s corner to help Wigan claim the first major trophy in their 81-year history.

FA Cup quarter-final

Wigan Athletic travelled to the Etihad Stadium with a semi-final tie against Arsenal at Wembley at stake, but this time they took on City as a Championship side.

They reached the quarter-finals for only the third-time in the club’s history after victories against MK Dons, and Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Cardiff City.

Uwe Rosler’s side stunned Manchester City, and set up their fourth Wembley trip in the space of a year.

Jordi Gomez put Latics ahead from the penalty spot and James Perch made it 2-0 after half-time. Wigan’s bid to retain the trophy was unsuccessful, after Arsenal beat them 4-2 on penalties, after drawing 1-1 in 90

minutes.

FA Cup round five

Will Grigg set Manchester City’s quadruple hopes on fire after his late-goal secured a famous victory for Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Manchester City, managed by former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, have been formidable in 2017-18, and currently have a 16-point lead at the summit of the Premier League.

Grigg scored in the 79th minute, and sent Wigan into the quarter-finals with Southampton set to visit the DW Stadium.

Manchester City are the third Premier League side to have been knocked out of this year’s FA Cup at the DW Stadium, with Wigan beating AFC Bournemouth and West Ham United in the last-two rounds.
