The Shakers had won two and drawn one of the three previous meetings between the sides this term, including knocking Latics out of both cup competitions

But they were never in this one, trailing 2-0 after eight minutes and 3-0 by the 20-minute mark thanks to a blistering start from the hosts.

Will Grigg and Ryan Colclough got Latics off to the perfect start, and Grigg rounded off the scoring with a penalty after he was fouled by Shakers goalkeeper Ian Lawlor.

It could and should have been even more emphatic, with Grigg and Max Power hitting the bar in the second period with Lawlor beaten.

“I’m disappointed how we conceded the goals,” acknowledged Flitcroft.

“But I’ve just witnessed, I think, the team that will win the league. The start wasn’t what I expected.

“We’ve worked on it, to be resilient first half and be really tight with our work, and not let the crosses come in, because Grigg is fantastic on crosses.

“(Yanic) Wildschut got in too easy to get the first one off, and it was a simple ball down the side for the penalty.

“The three goals have killed us, and the last team you want to be down two or three nil to is Wigan, with the momentum and confidence they’ve got in the team.”
