Former Manchester United man to answer Wigan Athletic call

The former Manchester United and England junior has become a staple part of transfer window gossip over the last few years, with Latics repeatedly linked with his signature.

Blackett, now 28, has most recently been playing out in the United States with FC Cincinnati in MLS.

He is a free agent after being released at the end of last season, and looks to be a like-for-like replacement for Rarmani Edmonds-Green, who was sent back to Huddersfield on Wednesday, midway through his season-long loan.

Crucially, Blackett would not be taking up a loan spot, with Latics only able to field a maximum of five in any matchday squad.

Latics have already signed former Tottenham, Liverpool and England defender Steven Caulker and Arsenal youngster Miguel Azeez, both until the end of the campaign.
