Former two-time Wigan Athletic defender Kell Watts has signed for League One rivals Cambridge United.

The 24-year-old centre-back spent both the 2021-22 and 2023-24 campaigns on loan from Newcastle United, under Leam Richardson and Shaun Maloney respectively.

He was released by the Magpies last month, and has penned a two-year deal with Cambridge.

“I am buzzing to join,” said Watts. “It’s time for me to make the next step in my career.

"And from everything I’ve heard and learned about Cambridge United, I am convinced this is the right place for me. It's a big challenge for me but one I am ready for.

“The gaffer has some great plans in place and I can’t wait to hit the ground running and join up with the rest of the boys for pre-season.”

Boss Garry Monk added: “I am really pleased to welcome Kell to the club. He is a great character, a fantastic footballer and he will add a lot of quality and competition to the team.

"I am looking forward to working with him and I am sure our supporters will offer him a warm welcome as he begins a new chapter in his career."

Watts made 35 appearances during his first campaign with Latics, as Richardson’s side won the League One title.

During his second spell at Wigan, Watts made a further 19 appearances – although the last of these came last December.

Watts has also spent time out on loan at Stevenage, Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough United.
