"Turning 34 this year, even though I still feel physically able to keep on playing, the time has come to call it a day," he posted on social media.

“There’s a great sadness, of course, and I know I’m going to miss playing the game I love, but I look back on my career and feel nothing but an overwhelming sense of pride.

“I know how lucky I’ve been to live the dream of so many.

“To my team-mates, coaches, managers and the staff I’ve worked with at all the clubs I’ve been a part of – Newcastle, Gateshead, St Mirren, Wigan and Carlisle, thank you.

“And to the supporters, it was a privilege to play for you, I know that I did my best for you in every game.

“Now, although no longer a player, I’ll return to being a fan. But I’ll always be a fan who lived his boyhood dream.”

Dummett, who was capped five times by Wales, came through the ranks at Newcastle United, for whom he made more than 200 appearances.

He joined Latics on a short-term basis at the beginning of last season, but made only five appearances – four of which were off the bench – before moving on and joining Carlisle.

Dummett featured even less for the Cumbrians, making only three appearances, and he was not offered fresh terms.
