Former Wigan Athletic man steps down from Ireland international role
Former Wigan Athletic star Alan Mahon has resigned from his role as assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland's women's team due to 'personal reasons'.
The 47-year-old, who won two caps for the Republic during his playing career, had been assisting Carla Ward since the beginning of this year.

"I'm a really proud Irishman and I've been incredibly fortunate to represent my country as a player and as a coach," he said.
"It has been an amazing experience being involved with the Ireland women's national team with memories and friendships forged that I will hold dearly for the rest of my life.
"I'd like to thank Carla and the FAI for giving me the opportunity to take on the role, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, I owe a debt of gratitude to all of the players and staff who were brilliant to work with.
"I've taken the difficult decision to step down from my role with the team due to personal reasons and would like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck.
"I've no doubt that this squad has the potential to achieve World Cup qualification and I will be cheering them on in every game."
The Dubliner had previous experience in the women's game as a coach at Manchester City.
Ward said: “Alan was a pleasure to work with and, on behalf of everyone connected with the Ireland women’s national team, I’d like to acknowledge and thank him for the important work that he did in helping us to secure promotion to League A in the UEFA Nations League.”
Mahon made 56 appearances for Latics under Paul Jewell between February 2004 and the summer of 2006, scoring 10 times.
During his time at the then-JJB Stadium, Latics won promotion from the Championship and then retained their top-flight status the following season against al the odds.
He also played for Tranmere Rovers, Sporting Lisbon – when he played against Real Madrid in the Champions League - Blackburn Rovers, Cardiff City, Ipswich Town, Burnley and Blackpool during his career.
Mahon's brother Craig is in charge of Nationals League North high-flyers AFC Fylde.
