Latics dominated the opening quarter and deservedly went ahead midway through the first half thanks to Joe Garner's close-range effort.

But a switch-off at the back allowed Jordan Graham to equalise for Gillingham within a minute.

And the lively forward put the visitors ahead on the half-hour mark after cutting in from the left.

It went from bad to worse for Latics just after the hour when Trae Coyle was given too much time and space to sidefoot past Jamie Jones from 15 yards.

This time it was Gillingham's turn to switch off from the kick-off, with Gary Roberts' corner then causing panic and Kal Naismith sliding home from six yards with 25 minutes still to go.

But the home side couldn't force an equaliser to lift some of the doom and gloom at the DW Stadium.
