The striker signed for Latics in August, with Emyr Huws going the other way. Both players moved on season long loans.

However, the Terriers have cut the Hiwula deal short, leaving boss Gary Caldwell just hours to find a possible replacement before the transfer window closes. Huws will stay with Huddersfield.

The recall will come as a shock to Caldwell who just last week insisted Hiwula will be staying at Latics.

“He wants to stay, he’s enjoying his time here, and he feels he’s improving as a player,” he said.

“He’s getting his opportunity here and he wants to be a part of that, which is great.

“It’s down to the player as to what happens, it’s in his hands, and he wants to be here.”

Speaking after his departure, Caldwell said: “We’d like to place on record our thanks to Jordy, he is a young player with a great attitude and he did well for us. He goes with our best wishes.”

Meanwhile Don Cowie, who was released by Latics last week, looks set to join Hearts.
