The dog has ensured Byrne, who turned 28 last Friday, has been leading the squad round the training fields at Euxton since the squad returned from lockdown.

“Luckily for me, I’ve got the fittest dog on planet earth, and the days where I wasn’t running I was doing two-hour walks,” he laughed.

“And this dog is never satisfied...even when we get home, and I’m blowing, the dog’s not even out of breath!

“It’s helped me massively, having a big dog...and I’ll hopefully feel the benefit when we get going again.

”I’ve always prided myself on my fitness, and hopefully it won’t take too long to get back to where we were before the season stopped.”
