Latics have 14 games remaining, starting with this weekend’s visit of Scunthorpe.

That’s four more than League One leaders Blackburn, who hold a six-point advantage over Cook’s men.

But the manner in which Latics battled back from two goals down last weekend to draw 2-2 at Blackburn has, in Cook’s view, tipped the balance of the title race.

“The good thing is, it’s very much in our hands,” said Cook. “Everyone’s well aware of that after last weekend – and I like it like that. I like destiny being in our hands.

“I’ve heard a lot of comments from people about the state of play at the moment. But as far as we’re concerned, we know if we win our games, we will win this league.

“And I think that’s a massive factor for the run-in.”

Cook need only look back to last season for inspiration, when his Portsmouth side finished with a flourish to nick the League Two title.

“I’d love to be able to look back and explain how you get over the line,” he added.

“I just think what you end up doing is reverting to type, and trusting the players and the process you have. At the end of the season, we will finish where we deserve to.

“If we don’t end up getting promoted, the easy thing for people to say is that the FA Cup run has got in the way.

“But for me, Manchester City’s cup runs haven’t got in the way of their league form.

“In my view, if we’re not successful in what we’re trying to do, it’ll be because we’ve not deserved to be.”

Meanwhile, Jordan Flores has joined Fylde on a 28-day loan.
