Jamie Jones auctions Wigan Athletic medal - and receives it straight back!

Goalkeeper Jamie Jones was thrilled today when the League One medal he had auctioned to help save Wigan Athletic was presented straight back to him.

The big-hearted 31-year-old raised a staggering £6,500 for the 'Save Our Club' campaign with his gesture.

But when Mark Holdsworth went to collect the prized piece of memorabilia he had won, he immediately handed it straight back to Jones - much to the keeper's delight.

Jones said: "I did this for a reason, to give out a genuine winner's medal and raise money for the club. It was a big decision, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

"I love this football club and there wasn't much more I could do.

"To raise £6,500 was incredible, thanks to everyone who donated, and Mark has given it back to me which is amazing - he said it'd mean more to me and my kids and grandkids in the future, so good on him."

Both gestures typified a staggering fund-raising effort by Wigan Athletic fans which saw them raise more than £600,000 by this lunchtime.

Fan Holdsworth, who was presented with Jones' League One medal at the DW today, said: "I wanted to give it back to Jamie because he has worked hard for it and it means a lot more to his family."

Wigan Athletic Supporters Club launched the 'Save Our Club' campaign on Wednesday with the hope they can part-own Latics, working alongside prospective new owners. The fund smashed its initial £500,000 target on Sunday and they now hope to top £750,000. The fund can be reached here
