Wigan Athletic’s January recruitment is already under way with striker Callum Lang heading back early from his loan spell at Motherwell.

The 22-year-old has scored five times in 20 appearances for ‘Well – including two in the Europa League and one against runaway SPL leaders Rangers recently.

And Latics have activated a clause in his season-long loan deal to recall him on New Year’s Day – as first revealed by Wigan Today.

“It’s disappointing Callum has to go back,” acknowledged Motherwell assistant boss Keith Lasley. “But it’s Wigan’s call and we can’t control that.”

Lang won’t be registered in time to play at Swindon on Saturday. He is expected to join the squad ahead of next Wednesday’s trip to Wimbledon.

It promises to be a hectic month – even with the ongoing takeover continuing to hamper recruitment efforts.

Matty Palmer will be returning to Swindon at the end of his loan spell, to be reunited with John Sheridan – the man who brought him to Wigan in September.

Darnell Johnson (Leicester), Curtis Tilt (Rotherham) and Tom James (Hibernian) are also due back with their parent clubs unless extensions can be agreed.

And the short-term deals signed by Will Keane, Viv Solomon-Otabor and Dan Gardner also expire this month, with Leam Richardson keen to keep hold of all three.

Latics could also face tough decisions if there is interest in Kal Naismith, Lee Evans or Gavin Massey – with all three out of contract in the summer.
