The eight-year-old, the inspiration behind the Wigan-based charity ‘Joseph’s Goal’, brought Latics good luck in 2013 when he was carried out by skipper Emmerson Boyce.

And Joseph worked his magic again at the DW Stadium on Monday night, after being invited to be special guest mascot.

Joseph, and mum, Emma, met City boss Pep Guardiola, before being presented to both teams.

Watching on from the BBC studio, Roberto Martinez – an ambassador for the charity, which is researching a cure for the genetic disorder, NKH – said: “Joseph is an inspiration in Wigan.

“He was our mascot (at Wembley in 2013), and he is a fighter, and the Kendrick family have put in a lot of inspiring work.

“The whole family are Wigan through and through, and show fantastic human quality.”
