The manager handed a first start to another January signing in Jamie Hanson in Tuesday’s loss to QPR, and acknowledges the situation isn’t easy for new players.

“It’s tough for them all going into games at this level,” Joyce said. “I thought (Jamie) worked hard and tried.

“It’s not an easy situation for players coming into this side because any player we’ve signed has been signed because they’ve not been playing at other clubs.

“We’re asking them to hit the ground running but we’ve got to get them up to speed.”

Joyce was left ruing two poor goals as his Wigan Athletic outfit went down 2-1 at QPR ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Nottingham Forest.

“I thought they were two poor goals,” said Joyce.

“I thought we did well to come back, had some good play and Omar Bogle had another chance and we were good value for getting back in 1-1 at half-time.”
