LIVE BLOG: Wigan Athletic administration Wednesday am press conference - how it unfolded!

Last updated: Wednesday, 22 July, 2020, 12:00

  • One of the biggest days in the history of Wigan Athletic FC began with a press conference at the DW
  • The administrators confirmed they have a Preferred Bidder - although would not name them
  • Contracts will hopefully be exchanged on July 31 - the same day as the club’s appeal to the EFL against their 12-point deduction

“Even if successful, Wigan Athletic must pay costs of EFL and the football club. To football supporters everywhere, your club could one day face this. Don't blame the Football League - these rules were approved by chairs in all divisions."

"Date for hearing has been fixed for 31st July."

“My experience tells me that problems can arise at any point during this period. I have other bidders I can go to, but this one is the best for the creditors and the football clubs. The anonymity of the buyers will remain until we sign off contracts and they are willing to go public.”

“Fit and proper persons test will take at best three weeks.”

*No laughing at the back please…

“The basis of sale is that contracts have to be exchange by 31st of July. Proceeds then held in escrow pending completion.”

“We have selected a preferred bidder, who yesterday in the afternoon received a lengthy letter setting out the timing any sale will take place. They have until noon tomorrow to sign that letter and part of that will confirm that their lawyers are holding the entire funds.”

“I received six proof of funds and five offers.”

“I am optimistic the sale will take place but I want to put on record…64 NDAs sent out to all sorts of parties both in the UK and abroad. Vast majority of these were never returned because we asked for proof of funds for 10 million.”

“I said there were two objectives, and the first was to reach the end of the season. Thankfully that will be reached tonight, and I'd like to place on record my thanks to the Supporters Club for the money they have raised to assist us to reach that goal.”

“Two other player sales completed this week. I can't name clubs or players names.”
