Lewis Macleod has spoken of the conversation with Paul Cook that made him realise his tenure with Wigan Athletic wasn't going to be lengthy.

There were high hopes all round when the midfielder joined Latics last summer from Brentford on a one-year deal.

But after a reasonably solid start, he made the last of his 11 appearances in the defeat at Luton on December 7.

And the 26-year-old Scot - who recently joined League One rivals Plymouth - has lifted the lid on what went wrong in the north west.

“I went in to Wigan, was kind of told I was going to play, and found out that wasn’t the case very quickly," he said. "I was fit for the full season, but I think I played 10 or 12 games.

“I started the first couple of games of the season, did well, and there was no reason to put me out of the team, but I found myself out for seven or eight games.

“I went and chapped on the manager’s door and not so much had a disagreement, but a conversion that didn’t go the way I thought it was going to.

“This was at a point where the team wasn’t playing well, so I felt I was justified to go and ask why I wasn’t playing.

"But it was made clear to me that I wasn’t going to be involved much, and to be honest after that I was just watching from the sidelines.

“That was disappointing for me, because I had been looking for a chance like that for a while.

"But I never got to play as much as I would have liked, and I knew early on that I was going to be leaving Wigan."

Having aimed to kickstart his career at Wigan after an injury-plagued time at Brentford, Macleod was doubly disappointed.

“It wasn’t great, especially for myself being fit for the full season," he told the Daily Record. "When you’re not involved, people start thinking you’re injured again.

"But I was fit – it was just that what I was told when I was signing never materialised.

“I didn’t fall out with the manager, I still have the utmost respect for him and everything else.

“He makes the decisions and he went a different way and liked the other two lads who played most of the season, so it is what it is.

"It’s just unfortunate that I wasn’t involved more.”
