More to come, says Wabara

The 24-year-old has made an impact in both of his games to date, setting up Reece James’ goal in the win over Chesterfield before opening the scoring at Crewe on Saturday.

Not bad for someone whose priority is to defend – but Wabara believes he can offer even more when he fully settles in.

“Right-wing back is a slightly different position to what I’m used to,” he told the Evening Post.

“The manager’s told me to get high up the pitch, get crosses in to the box.

“Hopefully that will lead to some assists, and obviously a goal or two on top is brilliant.

“Thankfully I’ve got a goal and an assist in the first two games and hopefully I can continue that.

“I think I’m going okay, while knowing there’s a lot I can improve on.”

Latics were unable to build on Wabara’s early strike at the weekend – a superb volley from 25 yards – with the home side levelling just before the break.

Wabara, though, reckons it could prove to be a point gained in the long run.

“We’re not going to win every game, but the important thing is we didn’t lose,” he said.

“Crewe made it difficult for us on Saturday.

“They’re bottom of the table, but they worked so hard and certainly didn’t look like a side at the bottom of the table.

“We had a lot of chances and, on another day, we’d like to have been more clinical.

“The results elsewhere did go our way, which made our draw all the more disappointing.

“But it would have been even more disappointing had we lost the game, and we have to look at the positives.

“This is a very ambitious squad, and we’re aiming to win every game we play.

“We’re still on a long unbeaten run, and we want to keep that going as long as we possibly can.”

Like everyone else connected with Latics, Wabara is keeping his fingers crossed the calf injury suffered by Michael Jacobs at Gresty Road will not keep him out for long.

“He’s been a key man for us,” the ex-Manchester City junior acknowledged.

“I’ve played against him twice this season, and he was a big threat on both occasions.

“Thankfully we’ve got good players on the bench who can come on and do a good job for the team, but hopefully he’s okay.”
