Having already dumped out Bournemouth, West Ham and Premier League champions-elect, Latics host the struggling Saints at the DW on Sunday, knowing they are within touching distance of the promised land.

“I think Wigan have a really good chance to win, because Southampton are not playing well, they’re not in a good position at the moment,” said Chimbonda.

“If they play against Southampton in the same way they played against Manchester City, with the same belief, then they can win.

“That was a great game – it was one of the biggest upsets ever!

“When you play against a bigger team in the cup, you don’t have anything to lose in the game, so you just play your heart out in the game, and that’s what they did and they did it well!

“It will give Wigan more confidence for the rest of the season.”

The Frenchman, who was named in the PFA ‘Team of the Year’ during his only campaign with Latics in 2005-06, also believes Will Grigg – the competition’s top scorer with seven – will again have a big part to play.

“Yes you always need somewhere there who’s going to score the goals,” acknowledged Chimbonda.

“And if he and the team can play like they did against City then they will get past Southampton easily.

“If they play with too much confidence, they will get beaten by Southampton.

“The goal Will Grigg scored against City was a great goal and everyone was talking about it.”
