Omar's future is mind-Bogle-ing - Joyce

Bogle fully justified Joyce’s decision to prefer him to Will Grigg in the starting XI with two goals in six minutes just after the hour mark to give Latics a short-lived lead.

And Joyce believes the man who started last week at League Two Grimsby, before joining Latics in a £1million deal, will not only score goals in the Championship - but also higher.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all to see what he’s done tonight,” gushed Joyce.

“His ambition is to play at the highest level, he’s hungry to do well, and he bought into what we told him about developing him to maximise his talent.

“I think you’ve got to look at his attributes.

“If you’re looking for people to step up, if they’ve got pace, a decent touch, and they can score a variety of goals, then they’re going to be a handful at any level.

“Players like that are hard to stop - if you’re quick, you’re quick. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing in the Premier League or the Conference.

“If you’ve got a trick, you’ve got a trick. If you can jump high, you can jump high. If you can kick it hard, you can kick it hard.

“The goals are the same size, and he’s shown he can score a variety of goals.

“If you look at his clips at Grimsby, he’s scored free-kicks, tap-ins, headers, worldies from 30 yards out.

“He’s made a good start, but he needs to keep his feet on the ground now, and continue to work his socks off.”

The only downside was the fact Latics didn’t win the game, which would have reduced the deficit to fourth-bottom Burton to just three points - with a game in hand.

“I’m disappointed we don’t end up winning the game, because I felt we deserved the three points,” added the Latics manager.

“I was happy with the whole team - the effort, the commitment, the work-rate, the desire, coming back from conceding a poor goal just before half-time.

“I thought we were good value to have taken the lead, and it’s disappointing not to see it through.”

Latics tied up the deal for Bogle three minutes before last Tuesday’s transfer deadline, funding the move with the profit generated by Yanic Wildschut’s move to Norwich.

It was a miserable return to the DW for the Dutchman, who gave away the free-kick that led to Bogle’s second goal, before his substitution with 20 minutes to go.

“I spoke to Yanic prior to the game about what he should expect,” admitted City boss Alex Neil.

“He’s old enough now to know what the script is, and he was always going to get a bit of stick coming back here.

“That can have two different effects - it can have an adverse effect where you maybe don’t play so well, but it can have another effect when it spurs you on and you have a real impact on the game.

“Unfortunately Yanic didn’t have his best game tonight.”
