Points appeal hope for Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic's administrators have admitted they 'will consider' an appeal against any attempt by the EFL to impose a 12-point deduction this season.

Latics are currently eight points above the drop zone with six matches to play after a remarkable recent run of results.

But Paul Cook's men would drop to the foot of the Championship if the recommended points penalty was applied for them dropping into administration.

However, there is a beacon of hope...a 'force majeure' clause in EFL rules allows clubs to highlight circumstances that are 'unforeseeable and unavoidable' - which the Covid-19 pandemic would certainly appear to cover.

Joint administrators Gerald Krasner, Paul Stanley and Dean Watson, of Begbies Traynor, are currently inviting offers for the club.

But in the meantime, regarding the possible points deduction, Krasner acknowledged: “It’s subject to appeal.

"My lawyers are aware of this matter and when we get the letter we will consider it.”

Krasner also hinted other clubs in the Championship may also be flirting with financial uncertainty.

“What happens if another four clubs go next month?" he told Telegraph Sport. "The Football League is going to have to seriously consider how they treat everybody fairly. It’s too early to say.”
