Latics were on the front foot for the majority of a pretty dour encounter, and almost took the lead in the opening exchanges only for Joe Dodoo to head wide from Viv Solomon-Otabor's cross.

But once again their attempts to pick up points was fatally undermined by a mistake at the back, with Curtis Tilt and Tendayi Darikwa getting in each other's way and allowing Chuks Aneka a clean run at goal.

The Charlton striker was only playing after having his red card against Blackpool at the weekend rescinded on Monday, and he smashed the ball past Jamie Jones into the bottom corner for what proved to be the winner.

Inspired by Thelo Aasgaard, Latics never gave up the ghost, but were unable to find the necessary in the final third to work Ben Amos.

And only a superb late clearance off his own line from Scott Wootton prevented Liam Millar doubling the Charlton lead.
