Wigan Athletic's recent resurgence hit a brick wall as north-west neighbours Rochdale recorded a thumping 5-0 victory at the DW Stadium.

Latics had gone into the game with high hopes of moving out of the League One relegation zone for the first time since October 20, after back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Accrington.

But right from the start they were second best across the board, and the visitors could even have won by more.

Kwadwo Baah smashed home the opening goal inside four minutes with a rocket that was past Jamie Jones before he could move.

And Matty Lund doubled the advantage on 19 minutes with a free header from close range.

Two goals in the space of six minutes either side of the hour mark put Latics out of their misery, with Stephen Dooley beating Jones at his near post before Alex Newby converted a penalty harshly awarded after Darnell Johnson tangled with Stephen Humphrys.

Tom James saw a looping header nodded off the line at the death by Rochdale skipper Eoghan O'Connoll.

But there was still time for Newby to score his second and Rochdale's fifth to cap a thoroughly miserable evening for Latics.
