Latics had been second best by a distance in the opening 45 minutes, and were perhaps fortunate to only trail by a couple of goals.

Jack Rodoni opened the scoring midway through the first half, and Joe Pigott doubled the advantage on the half-hour mark, with Ethan Chislett also hitting the crossbar.

Curtis Tilt gave Latics a lifeline by heading home Dan Gardner's corner two minutes into first-half stoppage-time.

And Rotherham loan striker Proctor restored parity with a clinical finish at the midway point of the second period.

There looked to be only one winner at this stage, but Latics pressed the self-destruct button with 15 minutes to go which decided their fate.

Goalkeeper Jamie Jones raced off his line to dive full length for the ball, but was beaten to it by Pigott, who was sent sprawling in the box.

It was as stonewall penalty as could be imagined, and Pigott exacted his own retribution by slotting the spot-kick past Jones for what proved to be the winner.

Latics remain second bottom of League One, but now three points adrift of safety.
