REPORT: Wigan Athletic 4 Accrington Stanley 3

Wigan Athletic's second win in a week was enough to move them off the foot of League One - but that tells only part of the story of a dramatic encounter against Accrington Stanley.

On the back of last weekend's fantastic victory at Sunderland - but without Lee Evans, Kal Naismith and Thelo Aasgaard - Latics were three goals up inside 32 minutes.

First, Tom James put his head where some wouldn't put their boots to nod Latics in front on 14 minutes, taking a whack to the face for his troubles.

Then, Dan Gardner latched on to a defensive error before lashing the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

And Latics were in dreamland on 32 minutes when, after Chris Merrie was upended in the penalty area, Will Keane sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with a blistering spot-kick.

Stanley took until the 62nd minute before responding, a complete fluke of an effort which saw Joe Pritchard's cross from the left drift past everyone in the middle and in via the far post.

And Latics suddenly had a game on their hands when, four minutes later, Michael Nottingham rifled home a superb strike into the top corner of Jamie Jones' net.

Ollie Crankshaw looked like he'd made the game safe seven minutes from time, with a shot that deflected in off Accrington defender Mark Hughes.

But Cameron Burgess ensured a nervy last four minutes - plus SIX added minutes - when he fired home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
