Wigan Athletic Supporters Club launched the fund-raiser on Wednesday to help secure the League One outfit's future.

They want to part-own the club - or even act as a safety net if no buyer emerges.

Earlier today, they passed their initial target of £500,000. And after increasing the goal to £750,000, Belgium boss Martinez - a former player and manager - gave it his backing.

He said: "Since the first time I arrived at Wigan Athletic in 1995, the club has held a special place in my heart.

"It has been a part of my family and like all supporters, I've been shocked at the struggles this year.

"I have so many memories of what we can achieve in times of adversity - from great escapes to our FA Cup Final win in 2013.

"I know the spirit of our amazing club and what amazing things we can achieve when we come together.

"The Save Our Club campaign is yet another example of what the Wigan public can do. I'm proud to have pledged to support the campaign."

Many other former and current players have also donated, while goalkeeper Jamie Jones is auctioning his League One winner's medal.
