And he says he's already been in contact with Lisa Nandy, MP for Wigan, who has made sure the club's plight remains at the top of the agenda.

"I want to do everything we can to save Wigan Athletic," said Sir Keir, speaking on LBC Radio on Monday morning.

"It's a great football club with a great history.

"And it's a reminder that in many areas across the United Kingdom, the football club is a centre of attention, a place people come together as a part of the community.

"We need to do everything we can to save these football clubs, and I'd be absolutely up for that.

"I think it's very, very important we do so."

When asked whether he'd spoken to Ms Nandy, MP for Wigan, Sir Keir added: "I have.

"Well it's more Lisa speaking to me about it!

"She's a great champion of her community."
