There was a double reason for Wigan Athletic to celebrate over the weekend with their juniors becoming champions of the Under-18 Professional Development League North for the second year in a row.

Goals from Tom Costello, Chris Sze, Millen Brown and Sean McGurk saw Kieran Driscoll’s side hammer Watford 4-1 win, in their final league game of the season.

And Driscoll was delighted to see his players pick up silverware on the pitch this time, as opposed to last year when the campaign was suspended due to Covid.

“It was a really strong performance from the team," he said. "We knew going into the game we could secure our position at the top of the table with a good performance and positive result.

“We made a bright start to the game and performed very well particularly in the first half, arguably our best performance of the season.

"The players' attitude and mentality going into the game was fantastic and they fully merited the result on the day.

“Last year we were fortunate to win the league, but in different circumstances with Covid drawing the season to a premature end.

"So this was almost a double celebration for the achievements of the last two seasons.

“It was fantastic to see the lads in such high spirits with the celebrations after the game and they were full of energy in the dressing room at the end.

"It's been a long, hard season and the lads deserve their success.

“It was ultimately the start of a great day with the news coming in later that afternoon of the first team achieving survival.”

Latics had gone into the game with a seven-point buffer over second-placed Birmingham City, and made the perfect start as Chris Sze converted Marcus Snell’s early corner.

Costello's 20th goal of the season doubled the advantage, and Brown made it three just before half-time.

The impressive McGurk made it four before the hosts notched a consolation in added time.

But all the glory belonged to Latics, who will now play-off against their southern counterparts to determine a national winner.
