'Stay away from the DW on Wednesday', Wigan Athletic fans urged

Wigan Athletic fans have been urged to show their support for the club by staying away from Wednesday night's home game against Queens Park Rangers rather than turn up at the DW Stadium.

The fanbase has been on the front foot in recent days, voicing their anger at Latics being placed into administration by the owners - and facing a 12-point deduction - against the best interests of the club.

Some have voiced their intention to turn up at the DW Stadium prior to the QPR to 'rally the troops' on their way into the ground for a vital game at the bottom of the Championship.

However, that would pose something of a public safety issue, and would go against government guidance regarding gatherings in public.

Equally important, the more fans plan on turning up, the more police and stewards would be required to ensure the safety of all present.

And the club can ill-afford to incur any unnecessary costs, given the current precarious financial situation.

Effectively, every penny spent on policing costs would be coming out of the fighting fund set up by the Supporters Club, which has so far raised more than £120,000 to keep the club going and help to pay staff wages.
