Suitors '˜couldn't afford Grigg' - Caldwell

Gary Caldwell has promised Wigan Athletic fans '“ with '˜100 per cent' certainty '“ star striker Will Grigg will not be sold this summer.

The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international has already been the subject of feverish transfer speculation since the end of last term.

After bagging 28 goals to help Latics to the League One title, he then made a splash this summer without even kicking a ball as ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ became the soundtrack of the Euros.

Premier League new-boys Hull, Championship favourites Newcastle and Scottish giants Rangers have all been strongly linked with a player who cost Latics £1million from Brentford 12 months ago.

But Caldwell is not losing any sleep about the prospect of losing Grigg or any of his prize assets.

“I’m sure there will be interest in my players this summer, and I’m sure there may even be some bids as well,” he told the Evening Post.

“But none of them will be going anywhere, and we have no need to sell anyone.

“We’re in a position of strength, where we’re only looking to improve the squad.

“No player we want to keep here will be leaving the squad.”

When asked specifically about Grigg, Caldwell dug his heels in even more.

“He will 100 per cent still be with this football club come the end of the transfer window,” the Latics chief confirmed.

“Will was a massive part of what we did last season, and I believe he will score a lot of goals in the Championship.

“Players like Will are very hard to come by, and it would take a lot of money for us to even consider letting him go.

“I don’t believe clubs will pay the kind of money we value him at. And that makes me very confident he will be here at the end of the window.”
